Christian parents have an inordinate amount of anxiety. You consider parenting your highest calling…and when you see your kids acting contrary to how you believe they should, you get anxious. You feel embarrassed walking into church. You hide from that sister-in-law with the supposedly perfect kids. You wonder, “Who’s going to marry this child or hire this child?” And then it hits you. You’re afraid they are going to be living in your basement playing video games until they are 29!
You feel guilty because you would NEVER have dreamed of speaking to your parents the way your kids speak to you. You must be doing something wrong, right? So you lay down the law. You yell, scream and throw your own tantrums to get your kids to listen. Your kids dig in and resist more. You try taking away all their privileges, but it doesn’t work. Consequences don’t matter with these kids.
I promise once you begin controlling yourself and your anxiety, you can put the ball in your child’s court…so your kids learn how to control their own behavior? Sweet, huh? You ready for that?!
